Mixed, mild Monday

The week began in a relatively quiet tone as investors, particularly on Wall Street, await key earnings and the U.S. Fed’s next interest rate announcement later this week. The S&P closed up 0.13%, the Nasdaq -0.43% and the Dow 0.28% as eight of 11 S&P sectors finished in the green. Energy and utilities rallied, but tech and retail lagged.

Performing well were Pioneer Natural Resources up 5.61%, Deere at 3.43%, Intuitive Surgical 3.46%, Exxon up 3.33% and Marathon at 6.57% as the oil companies enjoyed a field day. Heading down were Salesforce at 2.84%, Domino’s Pizza slipping 2.83%, Hasbro losing 3.04% and Newmont tanking 13.23%. The U.S. 10-year yield inched up to 2.8% while Bitcoin slipped 3% to below $22,100.

The TSX rose 0.52% after energy popped, though tech and materials lagged. WTI added over 2% to nearly $97 as WCS advanced about 2.5% to over $76. Big gainers were Gran Tierra Energy by 7.53%, Precision Drilling up 6.73%, Birchcliff Energy 6.45%, and Athabasca Oil up 6.16%. Heading south were Kinross Gold at -4.52%, Barrick Gold -3.33% and Agnico Eagles Mines -5.15%.
