Mild weakness as tech stabilizes
Thursday saw little direction in markets on both sides of the border, though Toronto and New York finished the session modestly weak. The TSX closed -0.23% as sectors were mixed. Staples enjoyed modest gains but were outweighed by losses in discretionary and energy.
Major movers: Suncor -2.17%, Cenovus -2.56%, First Majestic Silver -8.12%, North West Company 7.16% and Iamgold 4.31%. WTI was flat at US$69, while gold regained US$20 to US$2,515.
On Wall Street, the Nasdaq rose 0.25% to reverse recent selling, but the S&P closed the day -0.3% and the Dow -0.54%. Big movers: Tesla 4.9%, Dollar Tree 7.72%, McKesson -9.9%, Hewlett Packard -6.02% and Hormel Foods 3.58%. The U.S. 10-year-yield edged down to 3.73% as many expect the U.S. Fed to cut interest rates this month, while Bitcoin slid 3.25% to US$56,100.
