Mideast calms, stocks rise, oil slides

Markets were on edge after the U.S. attacked a nuclear target in Iran over the weekend. However, on Monday those jitters faded and stocks rose after a retaliatory attack on a U.S. air base in Qatar caused minimal damage. The major U.S. indices all gained nearly 1% as WTI crude tumbled 9% to US$67.25.
Major movers on Wall Street included Halliburton -6.78%, Arista 6.01%, Generac 4.86%, Super Micro Computer -9.77% and Tesla 8.23% Meanwhile, Bitcoin jumped 4.4% to US$103,900.
The TSX climbed 0.42% as all but two sectors rallied. Tech and telcos led while energy lagged by far. Winners included Iamgold up 5.64%, Air Canada 5.05% ERO Copper 3.53% and West Fraser Timber 3.45%. Energy names CNQ were down 4.09% and Baytex 9.15%. Gold held around US$3,371.
