Flat Friday, higher May

All indices except the Dow, which slipped 1%, ended Friday flat. This included the TSX which closed on strength with only four sectors in the red. Discretionary and industrials led the gainers while materials lagged the most. For May, the Canadian exchange gained 2.5%.

During the session, the biggest movers included Enbridge up 1.86%, Dollarama 4.23%, and Aritizia 5.06%, though Lundin Mining closed -2.06% and Laurentian Bank -6.52% to cap bank earnings week. WTI shed 1% to US$77 a barrel while gold gave back US$15 to US$2,327 an ounce.

Back on Wall Street, the major indices enjoyed a winning month as the S&P rose nearly 5%, the Dow 2.3% and the Nasdaq nearly 7%. On Friday morning, PCE data from April came in as expected which split speculation over whether the U.S. Fed will cut interest rates in June or hold. The U.S. 10-year yield edged down 4.5% on the report. Major movers: Salesforce recovered 6.08% after it tanked yesterday, Amazon closed -2.4%, Moderna -5.9%, Walgreens popped 6.08% and Caesars 11.48%. Bitcoin shed 1% to US$67,600.
