Dow tops 44,000
American and Canadian markets ended the week higher overall, with the Dow cracking 44,000 for the first time after gaining 0.63% on Friday. The index advanced 4.6% for the week, just like the S&P which climbed 0.4% for the session and surpassed 6,000 briefly. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq was flat for the day but jumped 5.75% over the week. Traditionally, American markets rally after presidential elections.
Wall Street’s major movers on Friday: Fortinet 9.88%, Palantir 4.46%, Tesla 8.07%, Airbnb -8.59% and Super Micro Computer -3.83%. The U.S. 10-year yield edged down to 4.3% while Bitcoin crept 1% higher to $76,700 and approached all-time highs.
In contrast, materials and energy led most TSX sectors down as the Canadian index closed -0.36% on Friday but rose 2% for the week. Utilities were among the four sectors which rallied. Earnings were influential on some major movers. Telus reported a beat and dividend raise, and its shares jumped 3.76% and helped lift BCE 1.41%. Elsewhere, Baytex closed the session -3.71%, Air Canada -2.59% though Jamieson Wellness popped 5.76%. Gold dipped US$21 to US$2,685 while WTI sank 2.7% to US$70.40.
