AI lifts Nasdaq past 17,000
On Tuesday, AI stocks continued to surge, lifting the Nasdaq above 17,000 for the first time. The tech-heavy index rallied 0.59%, while the S&P was flat around 5,300 and the Dow sank 0.55%.
Juggernaut Nvidia continued to rise, jumping nearly 7% during the session as AMD added 3.16% and Ford closed -3.95% and Moderna -8.5%. The U.S. 10-year-yield slipped to 4.548% while Bitcoin sank over 1.5% to below $68,300. Wall Street reopened Tuesday after Monday’s holiday.
In contrast, the TSX gave back 0.48%. Only three sectors gained, but energy and materials surged. They were more than offset by weakness led by staples and industrials. Key movers were Baytex, popping 5.22%, Vermilion Energy 4.65%, Manulife -2%, Brookfield Renewable and Richelieu Hardware both -4.13%. Gold added US$9 to US$,2360 while WTI crude surged 3.15% to US$80.
