Yields and oil climb, stocks fade
September ended on a weak note as the major indices in Toronto and New York closed downward, except the Nasdaq which gained 0.24%. The US-Iran war heated back up, which caused WTI crude to spike 1.33% to US$90.55 and the U.S. 10-year yield to jump to 5.3%, another 52-week high. Minerals were weak as well: silver down 1.85% to US$60.20 and gold slipping 0.65% to US$4,155.
The TSX declined 0.63% or 224 points as sectors were mixed. Telcos were the best perforrmer while healthcare and materials were the weakest. Dragging down materials was First Quantum Minerals which cratered 15.27% after the Panamanian government recommended the closure of a mine. Meanwhile, Ivanhoe Mines sank 2.58%, Telus rebounded 3.28%, BlackBerry 4.05% and Aecon 3.42%. In New York, the S&P slipped 0.25% and the Dow lost 0.86%. Major movers: Intel 3.71%, Synopsys 4.78%, Moderna -5.35%, AppLovin -4.98% and General Mills -4.91%. The latest PCE number in the U.S. showed inflation in August came in lighter than expected, raising hopes that the U.S. Fed will hold rates at its next meetingr.
