Markets extend gains
Markets in Toronto and New York extended Tuesday’s gains after the American indices closed on strength, but the TSX endured a choppy session. The TSX rose 0.34% or 106 points after six sectors rose, led by energy, healthcare and industrials, while five sectors lost ground, led by staples. Most active were CNQ, up 1.49%, and Cenovus 3.66%. Mining stocks gave back some recent gains including Orla Mining at -4.12% and Endeavour Silver -3.56%. Canadian bank earnings continued with Royal Bank reporting a beat and advancing 1.12%. SIlver remained elevated at US$58.50 while gold held at US$4,210. WTI advanced 0.8% to US$59.10.
On Wall Street, the S&P added 0.3%, the Nasdaq 0.17% and the Dow 0.86%. Major movers: Tesla 4.08%, ON Semiconductor 11.01%, Alphabet 1.21%, Paramount Skydance -7.27% and Sandisk -5.34%. Bitcoin rose a further 1.7% to US$93,185. The U.S. 10-year yield dipped modestly to 4.059%.
