TSX flirts with highs amid earnings blizzard
All sectors on the TSX rallied as the Canadian index surged 1.3% to 25,809. Tech, materials and healthcare led the way, fueled by Celestica which soared 14.34% on a blowout quarter. Other winners were Fortuna, up 9.24%, First Majestic Silver 8.1%, Tilray 7.89% and Brookfield Corp. by 2.96% to a record high. WTI advanced 0.55% to US$73 while gold touched an intraday high, eventually adding US$35 to US$2,794.
Wall Street dealt with a flurry of earnings, which lifted all the indices modestly higher: the S&P 0.53%, the Nasdaq 0.25% and the Dow 0.38%. Tesla climbed 2.87% despite missing its numbers, but promising growth. Microsoft beat, but reported weakness in Azure, and shares were punished by 6.18%. UPS met its numbers, but announced that it was slashing its Amazon business in half. Those shares tanked 14.11%. Meta beat and climbed 1.55% to a record high. Other earnings winners and losers: ServiceNow -11.44%, Vistra 13.59% and IBM 12.96%. Bitcoin rose 1.37% to US$105,170. The U.S. 10-year yield edged down to 4.524%.
