Mixed day, strong year
The last trading day of the year was mixed with the Dow more or less flat, down a handful of points, while the S&P closed -0.43% and the Nasdaq -0.9%. However, that hardly made a dent on a strong 2024. The Dow rose nearly 13% over the year, the S&P leapt 23% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq soared 28%. During Tuesday’s session, the TSX outperformed its American peers by rallying 0.44% and gained a respectable 18% for the year.
Key U.S. names on Tuesday: Nvidia -1.75% once more as the most influential stock, Tesla -2.15%, Moderna 5.66%, Palantir -1.58% and Marathon Petroleum 2.79% as the price of WTI climbed 1.2% to US$71.85. On Bay Street: CNQ popped 2.19%, Baytex 5.11%, BCE 2.93%, Denison Mines -1.88% and Power Corp. -0.91%.
Gold enjoyed a record-setting year, and climbed 0.65% Tuesday to US$2,623. Likewise, Bitcoin made fresh highs the past year and ended it at US$93,560. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.573%. Markets will reopen Thursday.
