Friday rally lessens weekly losses
Two days after the U.S. Fed announced only two interest cuts for 2025 and triggered a sharp sell-off, markets on Friday rallied which reduced losses for the week. The three major U.S. indices all rose over 1% during the session, but the S&P ended the week -2%, the Nasdaq -1.8% and the Dow -2.25%.
Major winners on Friday included Palantir up 8.54%, Nvidia 3.08%, Enphase Energy 8.59% and Apple 1.88%. However, Bitcoin sank 1.6% to US$95,745 while the U.S. 10-year yield slipped 1% to 4.524%.
The TSX advanced nearly 200 points or 0.78% on Friday, but shed 2.65% for the week. All sectors rallied, with staples suffering minor losses. Healthcare was particularly strong as well as tech and real estate. Major movers were BlackBerry, soaring 23.13%, First Quantum Minerals 8.04%, Tilray 6.59%, Aritzia 5.12% and Enbridge 1.49%. Gold added US$29 to US$2,623 while WTI crude climbed 0.19% to US$69.50.
