Stocks rebound, megatech soars after the bell
After selling off following Jerome Powell’s comments the day before, markets rebounded Thursday to recover most of that lost ground. The S&P rallied 1.18% past 4,900, the Nasdaq 1.24% and the Dow 0.9%, all flirting with new highs.
During the session, Warner Bros. Discovery rose 4.39%, Corteva soared 18.87% on earnings and Etsy jumped 9.25%. The U.S. 10-year yield slipped to 3.865%. However, megatech captured headlines after the closing bell triggered by a slew of earnings. Meta rocked Wall Street by announcing its first-ever dividend, rocketing shares nearly 15% in the after market. Amazon reported a convincing beat and jumped 9%. Apple, too, reported a beat, but also weakness in China, pressuring shares by -2% after hours. Meanwhile, Bitcoin advanced 1.344% to $43,100.
Canadian equities also enjoyed a positive session, though less dramatically. The TSX recovered 0.45% as most sectors rallied. Consumer staples, industrials and materials led the gainers, while energy lagged. Canada Goose reported a strong quarter and shares soared 7.8%. Iamgold jumped 7.81%, Tilray 7.76% and Aritzia 7.31%. WTI crude sank 2.6% to fall below $74.
