TSX pauses, Wall Street climbs
After rallying over the last two weeks, the TSX gave back 0.52%. Only financials gained as a component as staples and tech took it on the chin. Major movers to the downside included Shopify at -4.37%, lumber names like Interfor -3.96% and Western Forest Products -3.48%, and cannabis including Tilray at -3.07%. Climbing were banks, such as Laurentian by 2.39%, and metal names including Silvercrest up 6.11% and Sierra by 3.4%. The oil stocks were own, the price of WTI rose 1% to around $84.60 and WCS added 1.5% to nearly $69.
A deluge of heavy earnings and ongoing optimism drove markets hiring on Wall Street. The Dow barely made another record close as it rose only 0.04% while the S&P added 0.18% and the Nasdaq was flat, gaining nine points. Top movers to the upside: UPS 6.95% on strong earnings, Nvidia 6.7%. Losing ground: Lockheed Martin at -11.8%, Corning -5.26%, Universal Health Services -5.62% and Facebook at -3.92%, which has been a magnet of negative sentiment as it just issued a mixed quarter. After the bell, there was a deluge of earnings from Microsoft, Alphabet, AMD, Visa and others, mostly positive which helped lift the futures. Lastly, Bitcoin ticked down 1% to $62,000 while gold slipped below $1,800 an ounce.
