Stocks and yield edge down
It was a see-saw session Tuesday, though stocks faded into the close again. Losses were moderate, though, as the S&P closed -0.24%, the Nasdaq -0.14% and the Dow -0.34%. Notably, the U.S. 10 year yield retreated by 2% to 1.56%, breaking its uptrend. Energy, healthcare and tech lagged on the Dow, while financials enjoyed some gains.
Gainers included Nike up 2.04%, Airbnb 3.65%, Bionano Genomics popping 4.89% and Avis Budget Group jumping 7.7%. Losers included chipmakers Intel at -2.34% and Micron at -3.61%, Amgen at -2.33% and AT&T at -2.31%. Crude oil took a breather after several dramatic moves; the price of WTI was unchanged at $80.52 per barrel while WCS retreated 0.84% to $66.43.
Similarly, the TSX was basically flat by rising only eight points. Materials and real estate advanced while tech and telcos slipped. Of note, TC Energy rallied 2.78%, Teck Resources leapt over 5%, Lundin Mining climbed 2.56% and utilities popped, including Boralex by 5.05%. However, Arc Resources slid 3.38%, Tourmaline was down 2.88% and Peyto Exploration fell 4.03%. Meanwhile the Canadian dollar ticked up to 80 cents against the USD, gold added 0.38% to $1,760 an ounce and Bitcoin gave back 4.3% but stayed above $55,000.
