War sinks markets for Friday and week
The ongoing US-Israel invasion of Iran, plus a weak U.S. jobs report pressured markets on Friday and finished in the red for the week. Jobless numbers were far lower than expected. The S&P closed the session -1.33%, the Nasdaq -1.59% and the Dow -0.95%. For the week, the S&P lost 2%, the Dow fell 3% and the Nasdaq slipped 1.25%. Major movers: Boeing 4.08%, Nvidia -3.01%, Intel -5.51%, Teradyne -10.65% and Corning -8.57%. Bitcoin tumbled 4.25% to US$68,125. The U.S. 10-year yield held at 4.14%.
The TSX lost 3.66% for the week and 1.57% on Friday. Discretionary, industrials and financials led 10 sectors down. Of note were Aecon up 7.53%, Constellation Software 5.95%, Cenovus -3.3%, Methanex -13.42% and Algonquin Power -11.55%. Silver climbed 2.45% to US$84, gold added 1.75% to US$5,170 while WTI spiked another 12.25% US$90.95.
