U.S. stocks climb during impeachment, TSX declines
As the House voted to impeach Trump an unprecedented second time, American markets closed moderately up on Wednesday after a choppy morning. The Nasdaq finished 0.43%, the S&P 0.23% and the Dow barely slightly negative. Industrials lagged while consumer and healthcare were mixed on the Dow.
In heavy trading, Intel soared nearly 7% after announcing it was changing CEOs, and Eli Lilly gained another 3.75%, but the Gap shed 4.59%. Tech saw a mixed day with AMD sliding 3.75%. Recent IPO Airbnb continued its volatile run as it surged 5.72%.
In Toronto, weak energy stocks helped pull the TSX down 0.23%. Vermilion Energy, for example, slipped 3.37%. The index was also pressured by Alimentation Couche-Tard which is trying to take over Carrefour SA. ATD’B tumbled 10.19% as the heaviest-traded stock. Also changing hands was Aphria, popping almost 6%, and its peer Cronos leapt 9.51%. Staples, energy and materials lagged. Lightspeed rallied 8%. Methanex declined about 5% while Pan American Silver retreated 5.92%. The price of WCS actually climbed over 2%. Meanwhile, Bitcoin rose over 6.5% as gold slipped 0.37%.
