TSX rises, Wall St. mixed
A surge in materials, real estate and utilities lifted the TSX Monday by 0.37%. Capstone Copper jumped 15.67%, but cannabis soared after a U.S. senator hinted at marijuana reforms that would make lending to such companies easier. As a result, Canopy Growth jumped over 20%, Tilray nearly 10% and Aurora 8.72%. Meanwhile, Nuvei rallied 11.41% ahead of earnings Tuesday. In contrast, Shopify retreated 3% and Royal Bank dipped 1.48%. WTI added 1.5% to $90 and WCS advanced 3.6% to $71.
It was a mixed picture in New York as the S&P and Nasdaq closed -0.12% and -0.1% respectively, though the Dow inched up by 0.09%.
Major movers were Penn Entertainment up 5.27%, GM by 4.33%, Clorox up 3.81% and Disney gaining 2.32% ahead of earnings. Semiconductors lost ground as AMD shaved 2% and Nvidia sank 6.45%. Warner Bros. Discovery extended its woes by losing 3.8%. Industrials and healthcare were strong, while many other components were mixed. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield came in at 2.754% and Bitcoin rose 3.2% to nearly $24,000.
