TSX flirts with highs
Markets in Toronto and New York extended the previous day’s gains on Tuesday, with the TSX nearly making a record close. The Canadian index jumped 1% to 30,900 led by strong gains in consumer staples and discretionary. Only energy and another sector lost ground. Major movers were Denison Mines, spiking 6.35%, Alimentation Couche-Tard 4.91%, BRP 7.95%, B2Gold 3.75% and Cenovus down 2.54%. Gold was steady at US$4,131 while WTI slipped 1.5% to below $58.
On Wall Street, the S&P gained 1.43%, the Nasdaq 0.67% and the Dow 1.43% or more than 650 points. There were gains across the board, notably from Alphabet, up another 1.53%, Albemarle 8.09% and Keysight Technologies 10.01%, though AMD sank 4.15% and Nvidia slipped 2.59%. The U.S. 10-year yield also lost ground, down to nearly 4% while Bitcoin slumped US$1,600 to US$87.130.
