Oil spikes, markets tumble again amid war
Ongoing worries over the US-Israel-Iran war weighed on markets as the major indices slid on Thursday while oil spiked again. WTI jumped over 10% to US$96.20 as several countries untap their reserves and the Strait of Hormuz remains frozen during warfare. The S&P closed -1.52%, the Nasdaq -1.78%, the Dow -1.56% and the TSX -0.83% or down 275 points. Gold slipped 1.7% to US$5,085 while silver declined 1.5% to US$84.35.
In Toronto, energy made outsized gains as healthcare, industrials and tech led nine sectors downward. Major movers: NFI Group 6.61%, CNQ 3.1%, Goeasy -13.89%, MDA Space -7.15% and TFI International -6.93%. In New York: SLB -7.49%, Nvidia -1.53%, Charles River Labs -9.78%, Carnival -7.99% and Estee Lauder -7.92% The U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.263% on fears that a prolonged war will fuel inflation.
