Mixed markets, silver soars
The week ended on a record note with the TSX gaining 0.42% or 138 points on Friday to 33,141 and rose 0.32% for the week. Once again, precious minerals were the key driver as silver soared 6.55% to a record US$102 and gold jumped US$45 to US$4,981. Tech and energy also lifted the TSX while healthcare and three other sectors lagged. Major movers on Bay Street included Capstone Copper up 8.78%, Aya Gold & Silver 6.42%, Discovery Silver 6.4% and Bausch Health sinking 11.03%. Bizarrely, Lululemon urged leggings buyers to flesh-toned underwear; its shares sank 2.21%.
Markets were mixed and fared worse on Wall Street: the S&P flat, the Nasdaq -0.28% and the Dow -0.58% on Friday. For the week, all indices lost ground, especially the Dow at -0.7%. Key names: Nvidia 1.53%, Moderna -6.09%, Capital One -7.56%, Live Nation 6.39% and Intel tumbling 17.03% after issuing weak guidance. The U.S. 10-year-yield remained around 4.23%. WTI crude climbed 3.2% to US$61.25.
