Markets fade pre-Nvidia
Markets in New York and Toronto declined slightly on Wednesday as all eyes awaited Nvidia’s quarterly report after the closing bell. The S&P finished the day nearly flat at -0.02%, the Nasdaq -0.08%, the Dow -0.21% and the TSX -0.39% or down 143 points. Nvidia ended the session down 1.59% and roughly that much after reporting top and bottom line beats, but issuing slightly disappointing Q3 guidance that fell short of high expectations. Other key names: Kraft Heinz -2.09%, Moderna -5.77%, Reddit -4.36% and Arista 5.92%. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield stayed put at 4.649% as did Bitcoin around US$78,260.
On Bay Street, sectors were mixed, though a bounce in energy couldn’t offset weakness from materials and discretionary. TransAlta rallied 3.66%, Cenovus 2.03%, Wheaton Precious Metals -4.35%, Agnico Eagle -4.25% and National Bank tumbled 4.2% as bank earnings continued to roll in. Gold slipped US$70 to US$4,586 and silver declined 0.9% to US$67.95. WTI shed 0.55% to US$81.90.
