TSX and Dow hit record highs

Hopes of the U.S. government ending its record-breaking shutdown sent the TSX and Dow to new closing highs. The Canadian index rallied 1.45% or 440 points to 30,827 while the Dow added 0.68% to 48,255, crossing 48,000 for the first time. However, the S&P added only four points while the Nasdaq slipped 0.26%.

All 11 sectors were in the green in Toronto, led by strong gains in materials and consumer staples. The top gainers were Baytex up 13.64%, Orla Mining 13.63%, Northwest Health 11.94%, Discovery Silver 8.37% and CCL Industries 7.33%.
