Markets both high and flat
The post-US election rally continued into the new week, though only partially. The Dow rose another 0.68% or 300 points to a new high of almost 44,300 while the TSX advanced 0.12% nearly its own new high. TSX sectors were split, with tech and financials offsetting losses in materials and health care.
Major movers on Bay Street were Onex up 6.53%, Kinross Gold -9.62%, B2Gold -4.62%, BlackBerry 4.31% and Lightspeed 4.09%. Gold slid 2.3% to US$2,622 while WTI crude slipped over 3% to US$68.25.
On Wall Street, the S&P and Nasdaq were flat as drug companies dominated headlines. AbbVie tumbled 12.57% after it announced disappointing trial results of its schizophrenia drug. In contrast, Bristol-Myers Squibb‘s stock rocketed 10.49% on the news, driven by the strength of its rival drug, already approved by the FDA. Other notables included Albemarle, rallying 9.67%, Tesla 8.96% and Moderna -8.71%. Bitcoin continued its run by leaping 10% to US$87,925. Finally, the U.S. 10-year yield hovered at 4.3%.
