Oil spikes on Mideast tensions
As Washington threatens to enter the conflict between Israel and Iran, oil prices spiked Thursday. WTI jumped 5.25% to US$73.75. By far, energy was the strongest sector on the TSX as most others fell, led by real estate and materials.
Major movers on Bay Street: Parex Resources 6.03%, Baytex 4.25%, Secure Energy Services 5.84%, MDA 5.54% and Equinox Gold -4.93%. Gold itself held around US$2,657.
On Wall Street, the S&P closed -0.17%, the Dow -0.44%, and the Nasdaq sank six points. Major names on Wall Street started, unsurprisingly, in energy: Constellation Energy up 4.518%, Valero Energy 6.15%, Nvidia 3.324%, Tesla -3.35% and Constellation Brands -4.7%. Bitcoin edged up US$40 to US$60,950 while the U.S. 10-year inched up to 3.852%.
