Flat Wednesday
Trading volumes were lower than usual as the markets went sideways on Wednesday. Gains were modest across the major indices in Toronto and New York. The TSX added 16 points materials and industrials made outsized gains, but couldn’t offset weakness in most sectors, notably consumer staples and real estate.
The airlines, though, cruised higher with Air Canada rallying 5.35% and Chorus Aviation 11.11%. Other key movers: Telus -1.79%, Manulife -1.94% and First Quantum Minerals 7.38%. WTI crude slipped 0.2% to US$80.65 while gold gave back US$21 to US$2,298 an ounce.
On Wall Street, the S&P and Dow added a handful of points and were more or less flat for the session. In contrast, the Nasdaq rose 0.49%. Apple enjoyed an upgrade and rallied 2%. FedEx reported a convincing beat and positive forecast, and its shares shot up 15.53%. Elsewhere, Albemarle popped 8.1%, Moderna closed -11.01% and Amazon jumped 3.9% to a new high. The U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.322% as Bitcoin surrendered 1.65% to fall to US$60,800.
