Nvidia triggers tech, market highs
One name dominated markets on Thursday. Nvidia reported much-anticipated earnings late Wednesday and beat. Shares soared 16.25% as did its peers, including AMD up 11.46%. That momentum carried U.S. markets to record highs: the S&P jumped 2.11% to 5,087 and the Dow 1.19% to 39,069. The Nasdaq catapulted 3% past 16,000. Other key names were Moderna spiking 14.61%, Amazon 3.58% and Etsy -8.44%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.329% while Bitcoin was also flat around $51,800.
The TSX hit fresh 52-week highs after advancing 0.71% to 21,320. Only two sectors were down, including utilities while staples soared, followed by industrials and financials. Major movers were First Quantum Minerals up 5.04%, Enerplus 8.56% upon news of it being bought, Whitecap Resources 4.26%, CCL Industries 16.43% and Celestica 12.07%. WTI climbed 0.85 to $78.50 a barrel.
