TSX flat, tech climbs amid earnings

Tuesday saw the TSX shed only 0.09% as sectors were mixed . Materials led, but financials and staples lagged.

Banks gave back some recent gains, including Royal at -1.55% in the heaviest trading and Bank of Nova Scotia by -2.61%. Elsewhere, TC Energy closed -4.7%, Hudbay Minerals rallied 8.2% and Capstone Copper jumped 6.1%. WTI crude rose more than 1% to approach $80 a barrel to extend its current run.

Wall Street was focused on major tech earnings. The S&P closed 0.28% higher, the Nasdaq 0.61%, and the Dow 0.08%. In heavy trading were Tesla which closed -1.54 and Intel which gained 1.4%. Bank of America finished the day -1.53% while MSCI popped 9.04%. After hours saw a flurry of tech earnings reports, including Snap which plunged, though Alphabet rallied. The U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 3.888% while Bitcoin inched up 0.3% to $29,200. All eyes are awaiting the U.S. Fed’s next rate decision and comments tomorrow afternoon.
