Stocks, oil and crypto climb
The death of Queen Elizabeth II interrupted the flow of business news on Thursday. It was a choppy session saw but resulted with modest increases across the board. The major indices in New York and Toronto all climbed by roughly two-thirds of a percent and closed on strength. Financials were the strongest sector on both sides of the border, while consumer staples lagged. WTI crude added 1% to $82.75.
In Toronto, the major gainers were Suncor up 0.75%, the Bank of Nova Scotia 2.4%, B2Gold 2.52%, the North West Company up 6.2% and Nexgen Energy by 9.96%. Among the losers was Descartes at -2.55%. In New York, AMD rose 3.18%, the Bank of America 2.76%, Freeport-McMoRan rallied 7.56% while Regeneron soared 19.24%. Heading down were Apple by -1.46%, McCormick at -6.78% and Kraft at -3.64%. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield inched to 3.315% and Bitcoin rose 1.5% to $19,350.
