Stocks climb to end a positive week
Stocks edged up Friday to close a positive week, despite ongoing geopolitical turmoil. The S&P advanced 0.51% for the session, the Nasdaq -0.16% and the Dow 0.44%. However, the S&P and Dow have now climbed within 6% of their all-time highs while the Nasdaq 100 added almost 2% for the week. This performance may signal the end of the U.S. bear market over the winter. Again, energy led gains though all the major Dow components were resoundingly green.
Major movers were pipeline name Kinder Morgan up 4.21%, HP by 3.4%, Martin Marietta Materials at 2.62% and Nucor up 2.67%. Laggards included Moderna at -7.66%, Etsy -6.13% and Penn National Gaming -3.82%. The U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 2.484% while Bitcoin added over 1% to nearly $44,500. Gold remained stuck below $2,000 an ounce.
Oil continued its historic rally as WTI crude advanced 0.45% to almost $113 and WCS rose 1.5% to $101.60. The momentum in natural resources lifted the TSX by 0.31% Friday back above 22,000 though falling just shy of Tuesday’s record high. By any measure, the TSX continues to have a winning year. Energy and financials led gains. Cannabis names continued to zoom higher as Washington considers legalizing pot nationally. Tilray soared nearly 22% and Aurora 10.28%. Also, Peyto Exploration jumped 7.83%, Savaria 6.22%, and Tourmaline Oil 5.29%. Faring less well were Denison Mines down 4.15% and TFI International slipping 4.93%.
