Oil jumps, stocks flat
While the U.S. 10-year remained at a high of 5.239%, the price of oil surged again as the U.S.-Iran war continued to rage, possibly escalating. WTI jumped nearly 3% to US$93 to lift oil stocks, such as CNQ by 1.69%. Energy and tech outperformed in Toronto, but eight sectors lost ground, led by materials and industrials. The TSX shed 0.23%. Key names included Telus -2.68%, Saputo -4.75%, West Fraser Timber -3.55% and Enerflex 11.89%. Gold inched up US$20 to US$4,178 and silver gained nearly 1% to US$60.85.
Wall Street performed slightly better as the S%P rose 0.19% but the Nasdaq and Dow were basically flat after gaining a handful of points. Major movers: Synopsys 12.78%, Netflix -2.49%, Accenture 15.78% after a strong quarter, Paramount Skydance -9.58% after its Warners merger was approved and Corteva tumbled 83.81% after facing a fresh lawsuit. Meanwhile, Bitcoin climbed 1.4% to US$84,805.
