Oil surges, TSX flat
With no end in sight to the U.S.-Iran war, the price of crude oil continued to spike on Monday, with WTI jumping 1.75% to US$101.80, though off the day’s highs by two dollars.The TSX remained flat, though only two sectors, including materials, lagged. Best sectors were staples, healthcare and utilities. Major movers on Bay Street: Thomson Reuters 8.9%, Curaleaf 5.72%, Descartes 5.55%, Celestica -8.44% and Hammond Power Solutions -7.64%. In commodities, gold slipped 1.2% to below US$4,300, while silver fell more than 2% to US$63.
Rising oil fueled inflation fears and pushed the U.S 10-year yield nearly to 5%, a 52-week high. The market is pricing in a rate hike by the U.S. Fed this week. Wall Street lost ground: S&P -0.29%, Dow -0.29% and Nasdaq -0.56%. Key stocks: Crowdstrike 13.85%, Palo Alto 13.09%, Nvidia -3.36%, Intel -5.59% and Corning -13.7%. Bitcoin rallied 2.7% to US$79,425.
