TSX hits record high amid trade war
As Ottawa slapped Trump with retaliatory tariffs on Tuesday, the TSX surged 0.66% to a record close on the strength of financials and materials. WTI dove 5% to US $80.85, and energy and discretionary dragged on the Canadian index. Meanwhile, silver held around US$68.75 and gold added US$13 to US$4,666. Key names in Toronto: B2Gold 2.4%, CNQ -2.26%, Cenovus -3.97%, and Bank of Nova Scotia 7.62% after reporting a stellar quarter.
In New York, the S&P rose 0.3%, the Dow 0.32% and the Nasdaq 0.66%. Caught in the trade war, Albemarle sank 5.89% and Dow slid 4.07%. In contrast, Moderna soared 14.36%, Super Micro Computer 9.35% and Nvidia 2.19% a day before earnings. The U.S. 10-year yield slipped to 4.621%. Bitcoin gave back US$2110 to US$78,720.
