TSX, S&P and Dow make record highs
A day after the U.S. Fed cut interest rates by 25 basis points and the Bank of Canada held its prime rate, almost every major index in North America made record closes. The S&P rose 0.21% to 6,901, the Dow jumped 1.34% to 48,701 and the TSX advanced 0.54% to 31,660. The Nasdaq, however, slipped 0.25%.
In Toronto, materials propelled the Canadian index higher as silver shot up 2.8% to a record US$63.45 while gold edged up $45 to US$4,274. Tech was the weakest among four losing sectors. Key movers: First Majestic Silver 6.93%, New Gold 9.09%, Energy Fuels 6.24%, CNQ -1.91% and Telus -3.83%. On Wall Street, the cruise lines soared: Royal Caribbean by 7.42%, and Norwegian 6.81%. Elsewhere, Visa rallied 6.11%, but Nvidia slipped 1.55% and Intel sank 3.11%. After reporting, Oracle plunged 10.83%, dragging the Nasdaq down. The U.S. 10-year yield edged down 4.149%. Bitcoin hovered around US$92,425.
