TSX up, Walmart weighs on Wall Street

A rare earnings miss by Walmart sank the giant retailer by 4.49% on Thursday and dragged the S&P down 0.4%. The Nasdaq and Dow both slid 0.34%, but the TSX rallied 0.63% or 176 points on the strength of materials and energy. In Toronto, eight sectors rose while three sectors suffered only mild losses, including health care.
Other major movers included Paramount Skydance soaring 14.66%, Hewlett Packard 3.71%, and both First Solar and PG&E both falling 6.99%. Bitcoin tumbled nearly US$2,000 to US$112,400 while the U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.328% on the eve of U.S. Fed Chair Jerome Powell delivering his comments on interest rates. Gold gave back US$10 to hover around US$3,338 while WTI rose 1.2% to US$63.45. On Bay Street, CNQ rallied 2.04%, Barrick Gold 2.99% and Baytex 2.93% while Empire slipped 3.04% and BRP declined 1.65%.
