Bitcoin tops $100K, but stocks weak
Early in Thursday’s session, Bitcoin topped US$100,000, though ended the day below that milestone. The crypto outperformed the U.S. indices, however. The S&P ended the session -0.2%, the Dow -0.57% and the Nasdaq -0.21%.
Major movers included Intel at -5.17%, Tesla 3.25%, Palantir 2.86%, Ford -2.7% and Uber -9.3%. After the bell, DocuSign surged on a beat. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.178%.
The TSX outperformed its American peers by gaining 0.23%. Sectors were split, with utilities and energy leading the gainers and discretionary lagging the most. Notable names included TransAlta 9.26% and Suncor 1.53%. However, bank earnings dominated the chatter on Bay Street as TD missed and shares slumped 7.08%. In contrast, CIBC rallied 4.43% and BMO 4.16%. Gold declined US$17 to US$2,632 an ounce whole WTI held at US$68.50.
