TSX gains, Wall Street declines for the week
Stocks closed Friday on weakness, though the TSX managed to gain for the session and the week. The Canadian index advanced 0.26% on Friday and 2.73% over the week. A key factor is the ongoing rally in crude oil which rose over 1% Friday past $91 a barrel. TSX sectors, however were mixed, with materials enjoying outsized gains, but consumer staples lagging the most.
Major gold names shone: B2Gold was up 2.35%, Kinross 3.1% and Iamgold jumped 6.81%.
However, Wall Street closed the week on a down note: the S&P -1.22%, the Nasdaq -1.56%, and the Dow -0.83%. For the week, the Dow was -0.71%, the Nasdaq -1.27% and the S&P -0.99%. Major movers were Newell Brands at -2.37%, Amazon -2.99%, Adobe -4.21% after their quarter disappointed investors, Nucor -2.59% and Southwest Airlines up 2.59%. The U.S. 10-year yield edged up to 4.332% while Bitcoin slipped 0.46% to $26,400.
