TSX up, Wall St. down
Thursday saw another choppy session with stocks swinging between negative and positive, though Canadian markets ended higher. The TSX rose 0.47% as materials and tech rallied even further than energy.
Major movers were ATS Automation jumping nearly 12%, Lightspeed soaring 10.11%, Barrick Gold rallying 4.36% and Xebec Adsorption rising 12.82%. Heading down were Cascades by 4.32%, CP down 2.29% and Telus slipping 2.26%. Both WTI and WCS gained around $1.80 per barrel to top $111 and $94 respectively. The U.S. 10-year yield edged down to 2.842%.
Things were less rosy on Wall Street. The S&P closed -0.58%, the Nasdaq -0.26% and the Dow -0.75%. Again, tech led losses, starting with Cisco which plunged 13.73% after a disappointing report, Apple slipping 2.46%, Walmart losing another 2.74% and Hewlett Packard retreating 4.57%. However, PayPal regained 5.31%, Freeport-McMoran rose 3.9% and Booking Holdings rallied 2.59% on the cusp of summer. Meanwhile, Bitcoin bounced 3% to return abvoe $30,000.
