Weak tech, but flat markets
Wednesday markets were weak until the U.S. Fed released its latest minutes mid-afternoon. Markets didn’t bounce, but nearly climbed to break-even levels: the S&P 0.09%, the Nasdaq -0.11% and the Dow -0.15%.
Staples, energy and travel names led the gainers, including Kraft Heinz up 5.64%, Devon 4.73%, Carnival 2.37% and Booking Holdings up 2.79%. The street was happy with Airbnb‘s quarter and pushed shares 3.65% higher. Tech lagged with AMD down nearly 3%, PayPal sliding 4.2% and Netflix declining 2.42%. Plunging were ViacomCBS by nearly 18% and Roblox tanking 26.41% after disappointing earnings. The U.S. 10-year yield retreated slightly to 2.082% while Bitcoin was basically flat just above $44,000.
Crude oil also had a mixed session as WTI shed 1.8% to $90 a barrel though WCS added 0.4% to nearly $80. However, a 9% plunge in tech pushed the TSX down 0.45%, despite gains in materials. All eyes were on Shopify which tanked 17.19% to fall below $1,000 after the company issued a growth warning. Also down were Boyd Group Services at -5.24%, Park Lawn -4.14% and Lightspeed at -3.74%.
