Weak U.S. sentiment weakens Wall Street
A new report on American consumer sentiment showed an unexpected decline in consumer optimism from July to August, which pressured New York’s indices: the S&P -0.22%, the Nasdaq -0.35% and the Dow -0.26%. The data reinforced an expectation for interest rates to remain steady, but also fueled worries over the overall American economy. Major movers: Sandisk 7.63%, Micron 2.39%, Broadcom -5.94%, GoDaddy -5.56% and Applied Materials -5.12%. The U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.688%, while Bitcoin slipped another 0.7% to US$62,915. For the week, the Nasdaq gained 0.15, but the S&P sank 0.35% and the Dow lost 0.55%.
Though Toronto slipped 0.13% on Friday and from recent record highs, the Canadian index rallied 1% over the week. Materials were the strongest sector while staples and especially tech led seven sectors down. Major movers: Torex Gold 4.02%, Enbridge -1.2%, Enerflex 3.98%, Celestica -4.02% and Aya Gold & Silver -3.98% Gold itself increased US$22 to US$4,372, silver added 0.33% to US%64.55 while WTI rose over a dollar to US$82.30.
