Oil drives TSX and yields higher
As peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran broke down again, the price of oil Monday jumped as did yields while the fear of inflation looms. WTI crude rose 5.3% to US$82.20 as the U.S. 10-year yield leapt to a 52-week high of 4.705%. By far, energy was the strongest sector on the TSX, pushing it 77 points higher to a record close of 36,458. Eight sectors lagged, led by real estate, telcos and utilities. Big movers included Suncor, up 4.35%, International Petroleum 8.24%, Superior Plus -9.02%, Strathcona Resources 8.74% and Barrick Gold -6.45%. Gold itself rose US$49 to US$4,391 and silver rallied 3.35% to US$65.65.
In contrast, the American indices closed lower: S&P -0.06%, the Nasdaq -0.32% and the Dow -0.11%. Key movers: Marathon Petroleum 7.42%, Intel -4.06%, Datadog 11.48%, Palo Alto 5.82% and Nvidia -2.86%. Bitcoin sank 1.6% to US$64,660.
