Markets soar after Mideast ceasefire
Markets in Toronto and New York ripped on Monday after a ceasefire was announced in the US-Israel-Iran war the day before. Led by minerals, the TSX jumped over 300 points to set a new record at 35,275. Silver rallied nearly 3% to US$81.50 while gold rose about US$100 to US$4,317. The session’s biggest gainers were all miners: Aya Gold & Silver up 10.49%, Denison 8.41%, Eldorado Gold 10.05% and Barrick 4.21%. Predictably, energy was the biggest loser. CNQ sank 2.7% as WTI slid 4% to US$81.50.
In New York, tech led the rally as the Nasdaq jumped over 3% or nearly 800 points. The S&P leapt 1.66% and the Dow advanced 0.92% to its own record close. Major movers included Nvidia up 3.54% as the most active name again, Micron 10.84%, Intel 2.04%, Western Digital 16.1% and DoorDash 11.63%. While the U.S. 10-year yield held at 4.475%, Bitcoin climbed 4% to US$66,510.
