Markets ignore shutdown, close high

New York and Toronto closed at record highs again, ignoring the second day of the U.S. government shutdown. As Republicans and Democrats dig in their heels, the S&P inched 0.06% higher, the Nasdaq 0.39% and the Dow 0.17%. Also closing at a new high, the TSX climbed 0.16% to 30,154.

Major movers on Wall Street included Tesla, the most active name, skidding 5.11%, Fair Isaac popping 17.98%, Coinbase Global 7.48%, Equifax sinking 8.47% and Occidental Petroleum fading 7.31%. On Bay Street, eight sectors rallied, led by healthcare, discretionary and tech while energy lagged the most. Key Canadian names: Energy Fuels up 7.6%, Curaleaf 7.07%, Nutrien 5.62%, BRP 4.29% and Novagold Resources -4.06%.

In commodities, gold slipped US$7 to US$3,858 and WTI sank 1.8% to US$60.65. Bitcoin rallied 2.75% to US$120,830. The U.S. 10-year yield continued to lose ground, down to 4.087%
