Markets settle to end choppy week

It was a week of record highs and slumps that ended on a positive note. While the TSX gained 10 points on Friday, the S&P advanced 0.59%, the Nasdaq 0.44% and the Dow 0.65%. Friday’s gains, however, couldn’t lift the American indices into the green for the week as the S&P sank 0.3%, the Nasdaq shed 0.65% and the Dow slipped 0.15%. The TSX was flat. The latest U.S. inflation numbers were in-line with expectations which settled some investors’ nerves.
Seven sectors were positive on Bay Street, led by a strong performance in materials which outweighed four losing sectors including tech. Major movers: Aya Silver & Gold 13.3%, Baytex 2.62%, Constellation Software -5.95%, NFI Group -5.05% and BlackBerry 6.49%. On Wall Street: Electronic Arts 14.87%, Intel 4.44%, Tesla 4.02%, Costco -2.9% and Oracle -2.7%.
The U.S. 10-year yield edged up to 4.187% while Bitcoin barely rose to US$109,260. Gold increased US$17 to US$3,766 while WTI rose 0.5% to US$65.30.
