Weak jobs numbers drive markets higher

The TSX made another record close after rising 164 points to 28,915 on Thursday. Bullish sentiment south of the border drove eight Canadian sectors higher, led by real estate and discretionary, while energy lagged the most. High flyers on Bay Street included Bird Construction, soaring 13.19%, Descartes 7.04%, Methanex 4.32% and the Bank of Montreal 1.55% to make a new historic high. In contrast, Endeavour Silver sank 4.49%. Gold slipped by 0.29% to US$3,548 while WTI gave back over 1% to US$63.30.
As mentioned, weaker-than-expected hiring numbers raised hopes of an interest rate cut by the U.S. Fed later this month. The S&P advanced 0.83%, the Nasdaq 0.98% and the Dow 0.77%. Wall Street winners included Amazon up 4.29%, Williams-Sonoma 5.61% and Western Digital 5.22%. Losers included Estee Lauder at -4.86% and Salesforce -4.85%. The U.S. 10-year slipped to 4.161% while Bitcoin sank US$2,000 to $110,300.
