Election rally
As Americans voted for their next president, markets in New York as well as Toronto rallied. On Tuesday, the S&P rose 1.12%, the Nasdaq 1.32% and the Dow 0.89%. At the same time, earnings season continued.
Palantir reported and shares soared 23.26%. Meanwhile, Nvidia jumped 2.59% to surpass Apple as the world’s most valuable company, Super Micro Computer rallied 5.34% before reporting disappointing earnings after the close, Emerson Electric popped 6.88% and Wynne Resorts finished -9.56%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.289% while Bitcoin rose 3.4% to US$69,360.
In Toronto, the TSX climbed 0.43% as utilities, healthcare and staples led most sectors higher. Only three lagged, starting with consumer discretionary. Major movers: TransAlta up 6.92%, Capital Power 5.28%, Ivanhoe Mines 5.16%, BCE -1.36% and CargoJet -6.53%. Gold edged up US$6 to US$2,792 while WTI crude advanced almost 1% to US$72.15.
