Wall Street climbs, TSX declines amid earnings

Thursday saw the TSX retreating 0.24% after more sectors than not edged down. Utilities and telcos led the laggards, while real estate and energy were among the gainers. Earnings, both positive and negative, made headlines.

BCE reported a disappointing quarter and guidance, and shares tumbled 3.75%. That sentiment dragged Telus down by 2.34%. Meanwhile, Meg Energy gained 2.37%, Colliers 9.67% and Lightspeed tanked 24.2% on weak gudiance despite beating its numbers. WTI crude sank 3.6% to $76.50 after Israel rejected a cease fire proposal.

In New York, the S&P rose 0.06% to three points shy of 5,000, the Nasdaq 0.24%, and the Dow 0.13%. Like Lightspeed, PayPal beat numbers, but issued disappointing guidance, which led to an 11.24% sell-off. AT&T closed -2.94%, Comcast -3.76%, Ralph Lauren 16.79% and Disney soared 11.5% on a strong quarter. The U.S. 10-year yield edged up 4.152% while Bitcoin climbed 2.4% to $45,5000.
