When you have a new industry, you find a company that is a consolidator in that industry.  This one appears to be that leader.  To get exposure to this sector this is probably the stock you should own.  He is not participating in this sector as it is too speculative.

He is not a fan of these stocks.  The valuations are based on nothing.  Potential supply just keeps coming on and on.  Big tobacco will end up getting into this business.  They have the money, distribution and knowhow.  Some of these cannabis companies will survive and some won’t and he does not know which won’t.  They are not investments.  They are gambles.

Short the stock on the basis of marijuana prices dropping? The pricing of marijuana in Colorado has been dropping like a rock, something like 10% a month in the 1st year. The average selling price now is about $7.50 a gram, and there is going to be some pressure on that, especially as the market matures. Right now, demand is still outstripping supply. As companies raise money and bring up production, that probably changes. However, the end market is hard to quantify at this time. As far as Shorting goes, you can certainly make money on it, but you have to be tactful. When things go crazy and straight up, that is the time to put Shorts on. Also, when there is a lot of equity financing, that is probably another time.

(Market Call Minute) There are no barriers to entry in the business.  If it gets legalized for recreational use then everyone will be growing it in their back yard.  There won’t be any margin left.

Canada’s leading medicinal marijuana grower. It has had a meteoric rise in the last couple of quarters.  He tends to take a conservative stance to early stage businesses, and has not participated. He would be particularly cautious where the whole regulatory framework is up in the air.

The leader in marijuana. They are going to be an aggressive acquirer. Have done at least 3 that he can think of, so will be one of the companies that will survive. There is no doubt the industry is going to grow and it is going to grow fast. There are going to be winners and losers, and thinks this is going to be one of the winners. If you like the space, this is probably the name to own.

2017-01-24 COMMENT Jason Del Vicario

It is very difficult to make a fundamental argument for this marijuana company. It looks like the Canadian government is going to legalize marijuana, making good on their election promise. However, from an investment standpoint, he has a tough time valuing the market size. Technically, he would like to see the company do a nice big U and get back up towards $18, consolidate, and then move on towards new highs. To initiate a position, these levels are relatively good, but speculative and shouldn’t be a massive percentage of one’s portfolio.

There is no way to analyse marijuana stocks. They don’t have any earnings and they’re completely speculative. However, this is going to become a legalized area in Canada, and you want to go with the big guys such as this one. You can own a little of this and just leave it.

2016-12-14 COMMENT Christine Poole

This has been acquiring a lot of smaller companies. They have been issuing equity to fund a lot of their acquisitions. A $1.2 billion company, and it is very hard to value these companies. It will be very news and sentiment driven.

This stock can be really volatile. Hit a new 52 week high today, and then pulled back about 25%. If buying, don’t do it in one big chunk. This is the biggest of all the Canadian licensed producers. They have about 20% of the patients in Canada, and are starting to look at diversifying out internationally. This might turn out to be the global leader in medical and recreational marijuana. The sector has run up so much, and they still don’t even have earnings or positive cash flow.

There is a lot of heat in these stocks, and they have obviously done really, really well. Thinks they are very hyped at the moment. The best of these stocks, will ultimately be acquired. If you are looking for upside with a lot of speculation, this may be a category to look at, but not the kind of thing you want to risk your savings on.

Canopy Growth (CGC-T) or Aurora Cannabis (ACB-X)? He does not want to recommend either, but would take the larger Canopy over Aurora. This has an $820 million market cap valuation, and if they are lucky will have $40 million in sales next year. There is no rational way of evaluating these on any fundamental basis, so you are buying them on the anticipation that someone else is going to pay more. A very, very dangerous game.

There is some forward thinking by analysts and investors that the recreational use of marijuana is going to become legal, and companies like this will be well positioned. If that does happen, there will be another leg up on these kinds of stocks. Typically, in these very early stage industries, after the fundamentals play out and the dust settles, investors will start to question how many customers they will actually serve and how much money what they actually make. It is almost too early to do that, so stocks are going up and up on very little fundamental analysis by anybody, just on speculation. If you are in this, now would be a good time to take some profits.

A market cap of about $850 million, which is really high given that they don’t have any sort of net income to speak of. He is leery of companies that are too dependent on regulations or governments. Given that the stock has doubled in relatively short order, if you are sitting on a good gain you may want to take some risk off the table. Speculative.

2016-10-06 COMMENT Mike S. Newton, CIM FCSI

The positive effect is when Trudeau announced he was going to legalize marijuana. However, we all know that when government gets involved, prices, supply, profits get controlled, and the opportunity suddenly shrinks down less than what you initially thought. He thinks it is going to be a collision case in what happens.
