Market. The political problem certainly adds to the basic uncertainty. It is Congress that is really going to decide what happens, not Trump. In the meantime, it adds a certain degree of confusion, as to who is in charge and which way they are going. If the US economy picks up to 3% plus, we are bound to benefit.

Where is the Cdn$-US$ relationship headed? He is a little concerned about the Cdn$, particularly in the environment that we are still facing on the negotiations of NAFTA. Thinks there is going to have to be some giving up on the dairy side. Expects that we will continue to see the loonie drift down. A low dollar is not a bad thing. He also hopes that Bank of Canada keeps our current interest rates and doesn’t follow the US with their June increase.

Banks or lifecos? Although they are both in the financial sector they are quite different animals. Right now, there is pressure on the banks, mainly coming out of the US. Sun Life (SLF-T) and Manulife (MFC-T) are both good companies. Yields are about the same. If you are interested in an investment, then he would say half and half.

A good company and well-managed, but the environment still hasn’t really improved in Alberta to the point where you would really want to step in. There are others that are a lot safer in terms of the dividend. There are decent yields and growth elsewhere.

He loves the dividend. The last time he recommended this was when it was $58. It ran up to $63 and is now backing off. If it gets down to $60, this is a slam-dunk. They seem to have absorbed Manitoba Tel without too much trouble. If you want a nice dividend, why go any further than this? 4.76% dividend yield.

(A Top Pick April 14/16. Up 1.9%.) Sold this in July, mainly because of BREXIT. They have significant office holdings in the Canary Wharf area.

Right now, this is under some pressure. As far as the banks are concerned, he would just sit and watch a little. The charts all look indifferent. If the US Shorts continue, there could be a further decline in the bank stocks.

Has lightened up his positions in this. It got to a point where it was reasonably expensive. Thinks this has pretty well done all it can to improve its operations. With the new pipelines going in, the oil side looks like it is not going to be as accretive to the bottom line. It looks a little expensive for railroad. This is not the time to step in.

One of the best managed intermediates that you can buy, but nobody cares. You might as well accept that fact for a while. They came up with some really super earnings, and the stock has just gone down. You really have to believe in the energy sector, and right now a lot of people south of the border do not believe in our energy sector.

This company has had a tough time. They had a “drop the ball” situation in Alberta. They now have a three-year plan and are going to spend $500 million to bring their stores up. However, it is early yet. He would sit on the sidelines for a while, to see how it works out.

This is energy, but it is the pipelines, which he thinks is here to stay. They’ve shown themselves as able to grow and pay a reasonable dividend. A good basic stock to hold in your portfolio. Not a huge amount of risk. 4.6% dividend yield.

Just announced that they are reducing employees, probably more of the white-collar staff. He is a little concerned about the auto industry in general. It is a very competitive business. Gasoline prices have been cheap, which has helped. He thinks the industry is at the top of its cycle right now, and from here on things are not quite as happy as they had been in the past. He would stay away from the auto industry.

One of those companies that has a great, long term program that has kept it growing. The dividend has been good. This is one where you could step in and take a position. 3.7% dividend yield.

2017-05-18 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GUY-T Guyana Goldfields Inc.

Gold is an interesting subject these days, because it has sort of fallen back into its old pattern. The market sells off and the golds go up. It’s the go to place if you are concerned about currencies or markets in general. It is really a trading vehicle, not a “buy and hold”. If you are really very negative on the market and the potential of some slowdown in the economic side, some of them, particularly the juniors, have a fair amount of upside potential. From a chart standpoint, the golds have not been looking that badly.

Had a hard look at this ETF. There are some fairly well-established companies, plus a whole bunch of little guys. Apparently, in some of the smaller companies, the principals have been busily selling their shares as fast as they can. The worst thing you can see in any situation is people actually stepping back and selling their shares. Stay back until the dust settles a little. See what the regulations will be.
