Market. Markets have just continued to go up. Thinks a lot of investors have put a lot of stock into promises being carried through. There are some question marks beginning to surface. We saw it initially with healthcare a month or so ago. Going forward, we are likely to see a lot more of that. Whether it shakes some confidence in the market remains to be seen. Investors have to keep in mind that markets have generally been going up for almost 10 years, and we are probably due for a bit of a pause. Valuations are stretched and yet earnings seem to be doing all right. GDP growth numbers are strengthening, both in Canada and the US, so there are no immediate concerns. However, you never see it coming in advance. He thinks he would be more of a net seller than a net buyer because, as a value investor, he is finding it harder to find stocks that he thinks are selling at a good discount.

He still likes this. They have interests in what they call partner companies, where they issued preferred stocks on which they hope to make about 15%, and tend to pay out about 6%. This is really a long-term dividend growth story, but they’ve really stumbled in the last 1-1.5 years with a number of their partner investments, and it has taken longer to straighten out than anyone anticipated. It gives a generous yield, and doesn’t think the dividend is in any danger, at least for the time being. Still thinks there is significant capital appreciation in the stock. They’ve also started a “small-cap” division and he expects to see growth from this area as well. Dividend yield of 8.2%.

(A Top Pick July 15/16. Down 24%.) A number of things have impacted this company. They had the supposedly fumigation problem with exports to India. Pulses are probably one of the fastest growing demand areas within the nutrition segments. They did very well last year, and the stock may have gotten ahead of itself. The 1st quarter was very disappointing. Rumours are that India is going to have a relatively poor crop, which is going to have them import more. At $25, it represents fairly good value.

Potash (POT-T) or Agrium (AGU-T)? Had really liked Agrium because of its diversification. Then he saw that they were going to merge with Potash. To him, the merger takes away a lot of the longer-term merits of Agrium, so he took profits. Not sure he would look at either one.

In the short to intermediate term, this company is fine. The dividend yield is approaching 4.7%, pretty close to 5%, and that dividend is secure. If buying this as a conservative safety element, and part of an income profile, this is fine. He questions the longer-term business models of the telecoms. The Internet is changing a lot of things.

2017-06-07 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BMO-T Bank of Montreal

Canadian banks pretty much go in lockstep with each other, but there are deviations. When you look at their business mixes, they all are quite different businesses. The wildcard for a number of these banks has typically been the capital markets side, which tends to be a lot more volatile than earnings. He would not have any argument with somebody wanting to own this. (See Top Picks.)

Today you are buying this for Price/Book that is in the middle of the pack. Looking forward, it is at about 11X forward earnings. This has done a lot of restructuring over the last couple of years. They’ve put a lot of money into IT, and benefits have begun to show in the last quarter. Dividend yield of 4%. (Analysts’ price target is $85.)

This has been a tremendous story ever since they bought Avery Labels years ago. It has become a real growth story, and would be quite vulnerable to any earnings disappointment. Extremely well-managed. There will be a 5 for 1 stock split coming.

(A Top Pick July 15/16. Up 10%.) This has always managed to maintain a relative high capital base relative to the other banks, and has always had one of the better dividend yields. With the recent pullback, it is still a Buy.

It is hard to find value, but in the energy area amongst the seniors, if you have a 5-year time horizon, you are going to make good money. This is one that gives you that opportunity. Dividend yield of 2.8%. (Analysts’ price target is $52.50.)

A growth rollup strategy. They have grown a lot by acquisition as well as some organic growth. Trading at close to 50X earnings. It only needs to stumble a little in order to cause a great deal of disappointment. In order to continue the growth and the appreciation that we have seen, they have to continue to surprise people on the upside and continue on the growth pattern.

More of a growth stock, and you are paying a lot for that growth. Trading at almost 50X earnings. In order for them to sustain their multiple, they have to continue to surprise on the upside. As a value investor, this really hasn’t shown up on his screen. At this valuation, it is not something he would look at.

2017-06-07 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ECI-T EnerCare Inc

He likes this company. They were a few disappointments in the last quarter. Also, the mix of their rental product affected margins to some extent, but that is more of a transitory thing. It pays close to a 5% yield, which he thinks is pretty secure. As they get more and more into home services, that will help to improve margins, but also cash flow. If your horizon is over the next few years, this is a pretty good stock to own.

2017-06-07 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ENF-T Enbridge Income Fund Holdings

Enbridge (ENB-T) itself, over the last few years, has done a lot to reconstitute itself. In that restructuring, there are some fairly strong components. From an income point of view, this one is a fairly safe, predictable entity. He owns a little bit of Enbridge, but would not have a problem owning this one. Dividend yield of 6.4%.

If you buy this, you are really buying 2 things. Your faith in Prem Watsa and his ability to manage a more complex array of companies, and growth in India. The key to doing business in India is having the right partners or the right businesses. From a multiple point of view, this looks quite reasonable. For people looking for international diversification, this may be the way to do that.
