Market. Economically things are looking up in the US. Looking back at the underpinning economic strength of the economy of the pre-Trump administration, there is a lot there. Jobless claims haven’t been this low since the 70s. There is wage growth at 2.5%, which has been in an upward trend for 1.5 years. Oil was beaten up a year ago, and is now $50. This all adds up to a more normal environment. Thinks bonds go to 3% before it goes back to 2%. His portfolio is underweight bonds, but overweight equities.

Which market should investors focus on, domestic or international oriented? Being focused on domestic is probably a good idea. We don’t know if the border adjusted tax is going through or not. He would lean to the larger cap stocks where you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. A lot of the things are now favouring the bigger guys.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart AAPL-Q Apple

A number of analysts have said that this has had its day, it’s a hardware company and the innovation is done. Samsung was always a hardware competitor, and their problems is a great tailwind for this company. They have the tech right and the cameras are fantastic. People are more and more comfortable with the phones. It is becoming more of an integrated device with the watch. Conceptually he likes where the company is going. Technically, it looks phenomenal. Because of earnings, it has just broken up to resistance level, consolidating nicely and is ready to kick higher. He likes it.

The chart is showing consolidation. This is in the right sector and in the right industry group. Financials broke out before Pres. Trump was elected. The really good promise was the rollback of the Dodd-Frank act. He has a pretty positive view of financials. The stock is cheap relatively speaking and the environment is very positive.

A very large conglomerate with multi-industry exposure, but it is well-run. A great long-term hold. You can’t really go wrong with it.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CLX-N Clorox Company

This has done well and they’ve had some positive earnings revisions. In the “staples” category it has a few things going right for it. It is a higher payor, so you get a nice dividend. Earnings growth should be in the high to mid single digits. The catch is, any valuation is quite rich. It’s come off a little since the peak, but staples, as a whole, is trading expensive. Interest rates going higher will put pressure on the stock.

He likes transports generally. Hunter Harrison is rumoured to be stepping in to this company. Better economic growth is going to be good for rails. You may want to give this a little time to cool off before entering.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CVS-N CVS Health Corp

Valuation has come back into line. They have retail which had some good comps for a while, but people are not spending as much in the store right now. Also, they are losing share to Walgreens (WBA-Q).

2017-02-08 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart ETFC-Q ETrade Financial Corp.

Originally, this was a sort of discount brokerage. They formed into 2 segments, one being a bank and the other a brokerage. In 2009 they had a mortgage book of about $20 billion. Part of that was normal conforming mortgages, and part of it was a big home equity book. The whole thing was underwritten very poorly. That book is now less than $4 billion. (Analysts’ price target is $42.82.)

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

He is pretty positive on the US economy and global growth, particularly to what is happening in Europe. These are good leverage points for this company. GE is essentially a proxy for global growth. He would probably look for something a little smaller such as Honeywell (HON-N), which would be a little nimbler and focused towards the technology side of the industrials. (See Top Picks.)

Sell? He is not wild about pharmas right now. You should also think of this in the context of your overall portfolio and speak to an advisor. He would hope you have something that has a significant gain so that you could use this as a loss to offset it. He would just take his lumps.

2017-02-08 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GOOGL-Q Alphabet Inc. (A)

(A Top Pick Jan 27/16. Up 16.18%.) The company is doing everything right, and he is happy with it. They have their “other bets” category where they have been spending quite heavily and have been taking some heat. They’ve started to reef that in and get it under control. Has strong year-over-year growth rates in 20% category. Everybody has baked in the governments’ tax repatriation holiday. If they get that, that will be a nice move.

2017-02-08 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GOOGL-Q Alphabet Inc. (A)

They are reining in expenses, which people are a little bit upset about. Tax repatriation could be a benefit to them. 15% of their cash ($82-$83 billion) is trapped overseas. (Analysts’ price target is $991.78.)

2017-02-08 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart HON-N Honeywell International

An infrastructure play. This is about 1/3 the size of General Electric (GE-N), but is also a diversified industrial. They have taken a more technological progress of approach to being an industrial. Well positioned in the rising theme of software connectivity (connected aircrafts, autos, homes, etc.) Dividend yield of 2.22%. (Analysts’ price target is $131.66.)

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart IBM-N IBM

Traditionally, this was more of a hardware company, but has evolved quite effectively in the last few years. They have a nice earnings momentum ramp. Valuation, although they have to grow into it a bit, looks reasonable. It’s in a space of software services where there is less capital intensity. He likes where their strategy is taking them.
